The town Salzhausen has good shopping facilities for food and other goods required on a day-to-day basis (2x EDEKA, Aldi and Penny discounters, beverage market, organic food shop). In addition, there are also two hotels, an open-air swimming bath, a spa bath, a library, medical practitioners, a hospital, dispensing chemists, and various sporting facilities in the town. A weekly market takes place every Friday on the square in front of the town hall. Salzhausen has 2 nursery schools, a day nursery, a primary school, a secondary school and secondary modern school, and a grammar school. Further education and vocational colleges are located in Winsen/Luhe and Lüneburg. The Luhmühlen equestrian sports centre is approx. 3 km away. Salzhausen is a state-recognised resort town with diverse leisure facilities and recreational offers. The Integrated Municipality of Salzhausen is predominantly rural in character and therefore offers a wide range range of hiking trails and cycling paths. The nature reserve "Lüneburger Heide" (Lüneburg Heath) is about 10 km away and can be reached with the Heideshuttle (Heath Shuttle) free of charge (including bicycle transport) from July through October. Salzhausen is part of the HHV-Verbund (Hamburg Transport Operators Alliance) and enjoys very good connections to Lüneburg and Winsen via the express bus and the ASM (Anruf-Sammel-Mobil or "Dial-a-Ride") transport, and - via the "Metronom" trains - to Hamburg.
