Location description¹:
Today's joint municipality of Bardowick was formed on 01.03.1974 and consists of the seven member municipalities of Bardowick, Barum, Handorf, Mechtersen, Radbruch, Vögelsen and Wittorf. The joint municipality covers a total area of 99.95 km² and has a population of 18,398 (as at 30.09.2023).
The landscape of the joint municipality is characterized by the marshlands of the Ilmenau, Neetze and Elbe rivers. The town of Bardowick is known far beyond its borders for its vegetable growing. The administrative seat of the joint municipality is also located there.
