| Comment on the transport infrastructure: | The city of Emden is located in the northwest of Lower Saxony in East Frisia. Emden is the largest city in East Frisia, the third largest western German port city with 49,202 inhabitants (as of 31.12.2024, source: LSN) and the job engine in the region. With around 32,000 jobs subject to social insurance contributions, Emden is the region's job engine and, with a commuter rate of around 60%, is of paramount importance for the entire East Frisia region and, in some cases, beyond. The city of Emden is also home to the Emden-Leer University of Applied Sciences with around 4,600 enrolled students. Emden is the westernmost German port city on the North Sea coast and thus has an excellent key position within Northern Europe as a logistics hub for goods of all kinds with sea links to overseas export and import markets. Emden has the status of a GVZ (freight traffic center). Key sectors include wind energy, automotive, mobility and logistics. As the westernmost German port city on the North Sea coast, Emden maintains an excellent central position in the northern half of the EU countries and also offers a fast sea connection to overseas export and import markets. The port of Emden, with annual growth rates of up to double digits, is the third largest and most westerly German North Sea port. Various goods are handled in the port of Emden, in particular vehicles and RO/RO, but also forestry products of all kinds, minerals and much more. Emden plays an important role in the field of renewable energy. One of the most important sectors is the wind energy industry. We are a logistics hub for the production, storage and worldwide shipping of wind turbines, among other things. The port also serves many companies and service providers as a base port for the supply, maintenance, construction and logistics of offshore wind farms in the North Sea. The ship repair, ship recycling and ship segment construction sectors can also be found in the port. With around 9,000 directly port-dependent employees, the port, together with the Volkswagen plant in Emden (approx. 7,500 employees) and the nearby supplier companies in the Frisia industrial and commercial campus, is a significant economic factor and employer for the city and the region. The port of Emden's seaborne cargo throughput will grow by around 3% to more than 4.6 million tons in 2025 (approx. 4.5 million tons in 2024).2.6 million tons of general cargo, which primarily includes new vehicles and pulp as well as parts and components as part of the energy transition logistics, make up the largest position in the seaborne cargo handling portfolio of the port on the Ems. Around 1.19 million new vehicles were handled by sea in Emden last year, making it one of the three largest automobile ports in Europe. The handling of wind energy components increased by 13% to just under 144,000 tons. The Emden site has a potential of approx. 1,000 hectares of development area for future port developments and settlements. The continental markets are easily accessible by road, rail and inland waterway. Emden can be easily and conveniently reached by land, water and air for people and freight. With its hinterland connections, the city has the best basic conditions for inland transportation. To the south, the Dortmund-Ems Canal connects the port of Emden with the Ruhr region and the Rhine via Münster and with Berlin, Dresden and Prague via the Mittelland Canal/Magdeburg. To the east, the Ems-Jade Canal and the Coastal Canal provide inland waterway connections to the Jade and the Lower Weser, and to Delfzijl and the Ems Canal to the Netherlands and the Lower Rhine. In passenger ship traffic, there is a regular tide-independent connection to the North Sea island of Borkum with approx. 1 million passenger movements per year. In addition, around 2 million day tourists and around 300,000 overnight guests visit the seaport of Emden every year. The excellent geographical location in the quadrangle between Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium, the good supra-regional transport connections, the proximity to many economic centers and the maximum promotion of investments are just some of the factors that make Emden an attractive and efficient business location. The independent city is characterized by medium-sized companies from various sectors, including well-known German and international companies. Emden offers attractive jobs, urban living and housing, sophisticated culture and lively retail in a changing cityscape. Emden is directly connected to the German (A31/A28) and international (A7 NL) highway network. The expansion of the A31 has further improved Emden's competitive position in hinterland traffic. The city is still connected to the supra-local transport network via the B 210 and by rail. The A31 federal highway runs in a semicircle around Emden with five junctions at various points in the city. The highway connects Emden and East Frisia with the Ruhr area. It takes 45 minutes to reach Oldenburg via the A 31 and A 28. The federal highway 210 starts in Emden and leads in a west-east direction across East Frisia to Wilhelmshaven. State road 2 runs through Emden from west to east. The Emden-Münster-Ruhr area railroad line is double-tracked, designed for heavy loads and fully electrified. Emden has several railroad stations for passenger and freight traffic. Local public transport is provided by bus services. The central bus and main train station is located directly in the city center, with all public transport connections. Another hub in Emden is the Aviation Park North Sea airport. The site is used for private and commercial air traffic by passenger and cargo aircraft and helicopters. The airport is also specially equipped for ambulance and rescue flights. The site is used by companies involved in supply, air rescue and logistics for the offshore wind farms in the North Sea. The airfield also has a training tower for offshore helicopters. Further expansion measures are planned. Another dominant economic factor due to the proximity to the coast, the East Frisian Islands and the Wadden Sea National Park is tourism. Emden has a high leisure and recreational value due to its many green spaces and its water connection. The city is particularly well known for its harbor and many historical museums and medieval galleries. Emden's three cultural beacons, the East Frisian State Museum with its historical armory, the Kunsthalle Emden - Henry Nannen Foundation, the Johannes a Lasco Library and a host of other interesting sights and public facilities are all within easy walking distance. The adjacent canals can be used in a variety of ways. Canoe trips and guided boat tours pass right by the property. Other tourist attractions in the immediate vicinity of the city center are the historic ramparts with their kennels, which invite you to take long walks, as well as the old inland port, which can be reached via the Alter Ratsdelft to the city center and which offers space for various museum ships. Emden also has a varied tourist environment. |
