Location:
The historic Hanseatic town of Fürstenau was first mentioned in 1344 as „Vorstenowe“. In this year, the Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück, Gottfried von Arnsberg, had the first fortress part of today's castle built in order to assert his claim to this area against the County of Tecklenburg. Farmers settled around the castle, and the castle became the residence of the Osnabrück sovereigns for centuries as it was extended. Fürstenau was granted town rights in 1642. In 1647, Fürstenau was besieged for ten days by Field Marshal Hans Christoph von Königsmarck during the Thirty Years' War. The Prince-Bishop of Paderborn, Osnabrück and Münster, Erich von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen, died in Fürstenau in 1532.

Centuries have shaped the historic townscape. This image is particularly characterized by the prince-bishop's Osnabrück castle, which dates back to the founding period – today the seat of the Fürstenau joint municipal administration and, since 1817, the town's Roman Catholic parish church. The restored north-east bastion underlines Fürstenau's former importance as a military stronghold in the Middle Ages.

In addition to the castle, the old town gate „Hohes Tor“ and the market square with the Old Town Hall and the Protestant St. George's Church are well worth seeing. The remains of the town's medieval pillory can be found there.

The large Fürsten Forest vacation and leisure park is being planned on the northern outskirts of the town, part of which (off-road course) is already in operation. A total of 380 hectares are available for this leisure park!

The federal highways B 214 (Lingen–Fürstenau–Diepholz–Nienburg–Celle–Braunschweig), B 218 (Fürstenau–Bramsche–Ostercappeln) and B 402 (Emmen/Netherlands–Meppen–Haselünne–Fürstenau) run through Fürstenau. The A 1 (Hamburg–Osnabrück–Ruhr area), A 30 (Amsterdam–Osnabrück–Hanover), which is part of the European route E 30, and A 31 (Emden–Oberhausen) can each be reached in around 30 minutes.

The nearest long-distance train stations are Lingen (Ems) (26 km), Ibbenbüren (33 km), Rheine (40 km) and Osnabrück (43 km), while the nearest local train station is in Bersenbrück (23 km). The Duisburg-Quakenbrück railroad line, which used to run through the town, no longer exists. The nearest international airport is Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) (59 km). Bus route 610 runs every hour from Fürstenau to Osnabrück, and there are also hourly bus connections to Quakenbrück and (with a connection in Ankum) to Bersenbrück.
