Lingen has been the location for the "Energy & IT Competence Center" of the Ems Axis growth region since 2016 and describes itself as "Lingen Energy Valley": A natural gas combined cycle power plant with a total output of 854 megawatts (MW), a gas and steam turbine power plant with 887 MW, the Emsland nuclear power plant with 1,329 MW, which will be in operation until 2022, and the Emsland oil refinery make the city one of the strongest energy production and supply locations in Germany and Europe. This economic focus results in enormous locational advantages for energy-intensive industrial companies: For example, companies in the IndustriePark can be assured of an electricity and steam supply in all power spectrums; in addition, an optimum natural gas supply is achieved via various natural gas pipelines.
