Comment on the transport infrastructure: | TRAFFIC A traffic development plan is currently being drawn up for the city of Papenburg. ROAD TRANSPORT Papenburg can be reached via the federal highway A 31, junctions Papenburg and Rhede, as well as the federal highway B 70 (both running north-south). The east-west federal highway 401 runs about 10 kilometers south of Papenburg. RAIL TRANSPORT Papenburg railroad station is located on the Münster–Emden railroad line (Emsland line), which opened in 1855. The two-hourly intercity trains on the Koblenz–Norddeich Mole line stop in Papenburg. The Emsland Express RE 15 runs hourly from Münster main station to Emden main station, which has been operated by Westfalenbahn since December 2015. BUS TRANSPORT Public transport in Papenburg consists of seven city lines and various regional lines. They are operated by private bus companies. The city bus routes connect the Obenende, Kapitänsviertel and Aschendorf areas with the Untenende and Papenburg railroad station and are operated at least every two hours during the day from around 9 am to 6 pm. There is no service on weekdays outside these times and at weekends. On Saturdays, a basic network is maintained by the regional bus routes, which also serve parts of the city bus route. The regional bus routes run every two hours on weekdays. On Saturdays, there are up to three departures in each direction. There is no service on Sundays and public holidays. BICYCLE TRANSPORT In Papenburg, as in the entire region, there is a lot of cycling. As part of the traffic development plan, the city of Papenburg is currently working on a cycling concept. Papenburg has a docking port for seagoing vessels (coasters) and inland waterway vessels, which is protected from the Unterems by a sea lock. Bulk goods such as gravel, peat and timber, as well as steel and machine parts, are mainly handled here. AIR TRAFFIC The Leer-Papenburg airfield is located in Leer's northern district of Nüttermoor. The airfield is licensed for helicopters, motor gliders, microlights and gliders up to 5,700 kilograms and other aircraft up to 10,000 kilograms. The airfield is very important for cab flights. All of the East Frisian islands can be reached from here in around 15 to 30 minutes. |
