Special
location features¹
The administrative district of Nienburg/Weser is, geographically speaking, situated in the "middle" of Lower Saxony. Although it is classed among the rural areas, it lies centrally located between the major regional centres of Bremen and Hannover. As elements of the transport axis running between these two metropolitan areas, the main railway line between Bremen and Hannover and the federal highway B 6 are of central significance for the District of Nienburg/Weser. Moreover, the River Weser has an essential impact on the district's spatial structure as a central axis of settlement, transport and development.

The essential potential for urban and regional development includes

- the central position in Lower Saxony and
- the good accessibility of the neighbouring major and secondary regional centres,
- the availability of land for settlement development,
- the spatially balanced range of infrastructure and amenities with efficient central locations,
- the diversified economic and branch structure and
- a high potential of well-qualified labour,
- the considerable raw material resources in the District of Nienburg/Weser,
- the well-developed network of federal highways,
- the direct connection to a main railway route and the favourable transport location on the River Weser,
- the relatively balanced spectrum of educational and training institutions throughout the district,
- attractive townscapes and landscapes as well as
- interesting sights and places to visit, such as the open-air dinosaur museum in Münchehagen, with its potential for tourism,
- the expansive and varied cultural landscapes with high recreational value, and
- the existing potential for producing drinking water from the ground water over wide areas.

Comment on the
transport infrastructure:
The district of Nienburg/Weser is connected via the B 6 to the A 2 motorway, the supraregional East-West link (access point: Hannover-Herrenhausen). Via the B 209 (access point: Walsrode) and the B 215 access point: Verden), the A 27 motorway can be reached (the supraregional link to Germany's Northwest and North). Via the B 214, the A 7 can be reached (the supraregional North-South axis) at the access point Schwarmstedt. The southern part of the district has good links to the A 2 via the B 441 and B 61.
The district of Nienburg/Weser boasts a federal highway network totalling approx. 175 km in length. The B 6, which runs from Hannover via Nienburg to Bremen, is of particular significance to the district. Between Nienburg and Hannover the plan is to widen this trunk road into a four-lane highway all along the route during the course of the decade.
The B 215 opens up the district in the North-South direction, the B 214 in the East-West direction. The southern part of the district is linked with the metropolis of Hannover via the B 441. The B 209, B 61 and B 482 also serve to open up the district and connect it with other regions.
